What's new at Kids hurt too

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: As of July first, 2009, the Hawaii Foster Youth Coalition joined with Kids hurt too to expand outreach to transitioning foster youth.

We moved into the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Kukui Center at 245 North Kukui Street, Suite 203, Honolulu, HI 96817. You can call Lil Love (545-5683) for more information or to enroll your family. We have expanded programs to include:

A.   Peer Support Programs

1)      Bi-monthly peer support group for Loss from parent separation due to divorce, incarceration, or other causes: meets first and third Tuesdays from 6-8 PM

2)      Monthly peer support group for Loss from death or separation: meets first Wednesdays from 6-8 PM

3)      Bi-monthly peer support group for Loss from the death of someone close: meets first and third Thursdays from 6-8 PM

4)      Bi-monthly peer support group for Children in Care: meets first and third Monday of each month from 6-8 PM

5)      Monthly peer support group for Children in Care: meets third Wednesday of each month from 6-8 PM

All groups include dinner from 6:00-6:30 PM. There is no charge for participation. We accept donations.

B.   Mentoring Programs

1)      Computer skills training for K-12 and adults: call to get the schedule of classes (FREE). In association with Ohana Komputer.

2)      HFYC’s JUMP START YOUR FUTURE: a career and college preparation project for transitioning foster youth: call 545-5683 for times.

3)      Arts and Crafts classes and cultural activities.

4)      Junior Special Agent Training for 5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th grade foster youth. In association with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Call to SIGN UP

5)      Poi for the Soul: learn about native Hawaiian agriculture and values, help taking care of a taro field. In association with Ka Papa Loi`O Kanewai. MEETS MONTHLY.

6)      Surf for the Soul: learn surfing, water safety, and caring for the ocean. In association with Faith Surf School and many businesses and surf mentors. April 17th, 2010.

7)      Seeds of Love: learn how to cultivate plants, herbs, and flowers. In association with Native Plant Source – Dennis Kim. BI-MONTHLY.

8)      Cultural Engagement Activities: Ongoing collaborations with various activities provided by other organizations that teach values, cultural traditions, and positive skills like dragon boat race, paddling, water sports, lion dance, hand bell choir, etc.

9)      HFYC Resource Center for Transitioning Foster Youths: after school activities from 1:30 to 5:30 PM. To join contact the Hawaii Foster Youth Coalition at 545-5683. Here is what you can do at the Teen Center:

                                                              i.      Develop your performance skills

                                                            ii.      Play games like ping pong, foos ball, board games, and others as requested

                                                              i.      Get help with homework

                                                            ii.      Eat healthy snacks

                                                          iii.      Create video productions

                                                          iv.      Sign up for other fun activities
